Breast Implant - The Facts

By Alexander Mason

Having a breast enlargement procedure is an effective way of increasing the size of a small chest, which may be the result of underdevelopment, pregnancy, or subsequent breast feeding. They can also give back confidence to women who have had to undergo a mastectomy to treat breast cancer, and therefore are for both cosmetic and reconstructive purposes.

Since the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of silicone implants, it is not possible for women to choose between saline and silicone options before having their surgery, meaning that there is greater choice for women who are considering undergoing treatment. In this article we take a look at the different types of implants which can be used to carry out breast enlargement surgery.

Depending on the desired outcome, the size, shape, and composition of the breast implant will be decided upon keeping in mind the shape of your body, its proportions, the existing breast tissuse, and any other goals you may have. Although the material with which the implants are made differ, all implants are contained within a silicone rubber shell, known as the lumen.

Types of Breast Implant

Saline: Saline implants are filled with a sterilised salt water solution, which can either be filled prior to surgery or filled once the implant is inserted in the cavity. In the latter case, this helps the surgeon to make alterations to the size of the implant, making for a better fit and shape.

Silicone: Silicone implants comprise a soft, malleable gel which come ready made before surgery. Because of this, silicone implants generally require a longer incision in order to allow for easier insertion.

As the safety of breast implants becomes a growing concern, data is constantly collected on their safety rate. This will help with the development of future materials to make breast implants safer as well as increase their life cycle. In a similar way, the method used to carry out breast enlargement surgery is continuously refined. Should you wish to find out further information about the techniques and materials used, you should consult private practice who will be carrying out the procedure.

Where are the incisions made?

With saline implants, the main advantage is that it can be filled once it is in the cavity. Therefore the size of the incision is quite small, perhaps less than an inch (or 2.5cm). Typically, the incision is made in the crease on the underside of the breast, and is therefore hardly noticeable. However, the implant can also be inserted through the areola or through the armpit, depending on you and your surgeon's preferences.

When an incision is made, a pocket is formed under the breast tissue ready for the implant to be inserted. This normally sits either behind the breast tissue, or behind the chest muscle, depending on the size of the original breast tissue and the desired outcome.
