Home remedies to help deal with menstrual cramps


Take supplements: Ask your doctor to recommend a supplement containing calcium, magnesium and potassium. Magnesium helps the body to absorb calcium and studies have shown that women taking calcium have a lesser incidence of cramps. Also take multivitamin containing calcium after checking with your physician.




Avoid alcohol, smoking and caffeine:
During menses many women have water retention that presents as bloating or puffiness in the face. Alcohol has the same effect so minimize or stop alcohol intake. Caffeine present in colas, chocolate, coffee and tea increase nervousness which may add to menstrual discomfort.

Use Heat: Use a hot water bottle or heating pad on your abdomen or lower back for quick relief. Also sip herbal teas like chamomile, mint or blackberry as they soothe the nerves.

Walk and Exercise: Make sure you don’t skip your regular walk or exercise just before your period is due. The endorphins released after exercise naturally relieve pain. Yoga stretches are also of value.

Get amorous: Making love before your period is due helps get your circulation pumping and releases feel good hormones that drive the pain away.

Home spa: Add one cup of sea salt to the same amount of baking soda to a warm bath. Soak for at least 20 minutes for maximum results.

Some women take diuretics to combat water retention. This is a harmful practice as it washes out important minerals along with water. Instead stay clear of salty processed food and alcohol.

Empty your bladder as soon as you have the urge. A full bladder will contribute to the cramps.

Try acupressure: Pressing trigger points located in the foot may ease the pain and is worth a try. Press the depressions above the heel on either side gently with the thumb and fingertips. Move upwards along the sides of the Achilles tendon to the calf muscle. Repeat twice and move on to the next foot.
